Offseason - Goalies

If there is one position that the Hurricanes are absolutely stocked in, this is it. Cam Ward won the Conn Smythe, Martin Gerber won the most games in franchise history, and there are three solid prospects waiting in the wings.

  • Martin Gerber - Made $1,064,000 last season and is a UFA. Unfortunately, the flu at the beginning of the Montreal series cost him his starting role. Many teams are in need of solid goaltending and the Canes are unlikely to pay him $2,000,000 to be a backup goalie. Projection: Gone
  • Cam Ward - Still has another year on his entry contract ($684,000). Next season he'll get the big raise as an RFA, but he's solid in the fold now. Projection: Stays
  • Prospects - Daniel Manzato, Kevin Nastiuk, and Justin Peters are all solid goaltending prospects with two-way deals. One of them may step up as the backup or the Canes may pick up a cheap UFA goalie somewhere. Projection: Would not surprise me to see one of them gone on Draft Day

I'll never forget how two-three years ago, people would constantly get on JR about "wasting top draft picks on numerous goaltenders"...well, as tedious as they may have been at the time, such actions have come to pay off well thus far.

Pretty much agree with your assessment...Gerbs is proving to be a wee bit expensive to keep, especially considering that all he was/is is a slightly better version of Kevin Weekes.

Of the prospects, I hope we keep Kevin Nastiuk, and really could care less what happens to the other two. I could very well be wrong, but I don't think Manzato and Peters have gotten the accolades that Nastiuk has already picked up as a Medicine Hat Tiger.
