The jist of the article and AtY's follow-up is that you never see the mainstream media citing sources in other media outlets, whereas bloggers cite sources without a thought for several reasons - one, it's just plain courtesy; two, it gives the reader the ability to verify sources and weight them in judging the article/post's worth. The example he gives is a great one:
For instance, if I were to post this and attribute it to Spector’s, you’d most likely give it some serious consideration. Two more sources confirmed that the Red Wings are seriously considering Hasek as their number 1, but one source believes the team may be doing so “out of frustration.” That source went on to say, “If Anson Carter does land in Toronto in the next day or so, the Wings will not be able to pick up the top 6 forward they need to feel comfortable moving a top 6 guy for Biron or Giguere.”But when I tell you that it actually came from the child-like imagination of Dwayne Klessel (aka Eklund), your natural—and correct—reaction is to laugh it off.
I'm not going to post it verbatim. Check it out and make your own conclusions.
