EJ Hradek was a guest on Adam Gold's show today (850 the Buzz) and he brought up some interesting points about the situation in New Jersey. The scenario he says to look out for is this - Alex Mogilny reports to camp and injures himself somewhere around October 3rd. He'll probably need season-ending surgery. Since he was injured in a hockey context (as opposed to if he was injured or killed now as not part of the team) his salary does not count against the cap.
It's definitely dirty pool, but it's clever and it would be difficult to prove that it wasn't legit. He probably does need some sort of surgery.

well, problem with this scenario is that Mogilny is and always has been the type to march to the sound of his own drummer
I couldn't see him doing Lou a favour after last year's debacle
NJ has to move someone anyway - they are already at or about the maximum allowed cap for the offseason (48.4) and still have to sign Gionta, Martin and one or two filler guys
meaning they have to move 4-5 million before they even get to training camp
Yeah, they'd still be screwed regardless. The Mogilny solution would at least allow them to be less screwed.
I think the trade-off would be he still collects money when injured, it just doesn't count against the cap - the opposite of the current situation.
That's true and as you said it would be hard to prove.
But someone would cry foul and the league would certainly be unhappy. Why didn't they get the surgery in the offseason.
As I said though, Mogilny would not go for it. He can still play though - Lou might be able to find someone to take him at some point.
You also have to find a doctor to go along with the whole notion
I'm sure Lamoriello could dump Almo and Malakhov for high draft picks. It's almost his only choice.
